An Unconventional Fudō Myōō Statue Said to Be Sculpted by the Hand of Musashi

This standing statue of Fudō Myōō is a rare Buddhist image believed to have been created by the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Unlike typical depictions of Fudō Myōō, this statue grasps a sword with both hands in a battle-ready stance—an image that strikingly evokes Musashi himself. In the Collected Calligraphy and Writings of Miyamoto Musashi, it is praised as “something no ordinary Buddhist sculptor could ever dream of imagining.” Truly a self-portrait in sculptural form, this historic masterpiece has been digitally preserved through high-precision 3D scanning, made possible by the cooperation of its current owner and the Shimada Museum of Art, where it is exhibited on loan.Using the scanned data, the statue was precisely carved with a high-accuracy 3D cutting machine. Skilled artisans then polished the surface by hand, carefully added intricate chisel details, and finished the piece with hand-painted coloring. The result is an extraordinarily faithful reproduction, brought to life through the manufacturer's unique “Wood-Carving Hybrid Method,” which combines modern digital technology, mechatronics, and traditional craftsmanship.

Gandenzan Ungan Zen Temple—affectionately known as “Iwato Kannon”—is revered for housing the famous Reigandō cave within its grounds, where the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi is said to have written The Book of Five Rings. As a result, the temple draws many visitors and fans of Musashi from all over Japan.
The Standing Statue of Fudō Myōō, currently on exhibit at the Shimada Museum of Art as a loan from its current owner, was once passed down through generations at Ungan Zen Temple until 65 years ago.
As our reproduction project neared its final phase in late 2024, the current owner expressed a heartfelt wish: “Would it be possible to donate a life-size replica of the statue to Ungan Zen Temple?” In response, our company formally donated the replica on February 20, 2025. After 65 years, the statue of Fudō Myōō returned to its spiritual home.
On this occasion, we humbly requested that Chief Priest Baba conduct an Eye-Opening Ceremony (Kaigen Kuyō) for the replicas we are offering for sale. With his gracious consent, not only was the ritual performed, but prayers for the fulfillment of wishes were also bestowed—something not originally planned.
Thanks to this, each replica comes with two precious forms of authentication: a Certificate of Artistic Value from the Shimada Museum of Art, and a Certificate of Eye-Opening from Ungan Zen Temple, signifying its religious authenticity. This makes it a truly rare and exceptional item, endorsed by the two sacred sites most closely associated with Musashi.
