Five Wisdom Kings / Godai Myoo: Gundari Myoo (五大明王 軍荼利明王)

Five Myoos come together to form the group of Myoo; Fudo Myoo is at the center, with Gozanze Myoo, Gundari Myoo, Daiitoku Myoo, and Kongoyasha Myoo positioned around it to the north, south, east, and west. The five great Myoo are the most powerful forms of anger that get rid of various obstacles, but they also completely envelop and protect the center and the four cardinal directions. Thus, it is said that the five Myoo have both great power and benefits.

Gundari Myo-o (also known as Gandari Myo-o) is one of the bodhisattvas and Myo-o (wisdom kings) in esoteric Buddhism, with particular significance in Japanese esoteric Buddhism. He is also referred to as Fudo Myo-o, and is believed to repel demons and obstacles, protect believers, and spread the teachings of Buddhism.

Gundari Myo-o originally emerged as an object of worship in the Vajrayana tradition, which is an offshoot of Buddhism originating from India. He later became known as Fudo Myo-o and was venerated by practitioners and followers of esoteric Buddhism who believed in his ability to dispel evil forces using magic and mantras, as well as to assist in the purification of the mind and body.

Gundari Myo-o is typically depicted with an angry countenance, blue skin, and multiple eyes on his many hands and head. These characteristics symbolize the transcendence of negative emotions such as anger and rage and represent his ability to overcome them. Additionally, his hands often hold various weapons and tools, which are seen as instruments for warding off evil beings and overcoming challenges.

The worship of Gundari Myo-o is widely practiced in Japanese esoteric Buddhist sects such as Shingon and Tendai. Practitioners offer prayers to him, seeking his protection and assistance in vanquishing malevolent forces and attaining enlightenment. It is believed that through specific rituals and recitations of mantras, practitioners can receive the blessings and protection of Gundari Myo-o.
