Kokuzo Bosatsu (Akasagarbha Bodhisattva) is said to be the Buddha who presides over the two virtues of the wisdom and blessings of Dainichi Nyorai (Vairocana). He is generally worshipped as "the Buddha who bestows wisdom.” Worship of Kokuzo Bosatsu already seems to have been widespread in the Nara period (710-794), and the young Kobo Daishi practiced the "Kokuzo Gumonjiho", with this bodhisattva as the principal deity both at Mount Tairyu in Awa and at Muroto-zaki in Tosa. Just as the void is vast and encompasses and stores all things within itself, it is said that Kokuzo is a bodhisattva that possesses limitless and infinite goodness and wisdom, constantly bestowing the two virtues of mercy and compassion on people to fulfill their various aspirations.
