Zao Gongen — Maruyama Meikei presents a powerful, dynamic figure associated with the meeting point of Japan’s Shinto traditions and Buddhism, a form traditionally seen only in Japan.
The sculpture captures the moment the deity springs forth from rock, with a youthful, fierce expression and red flames that give the piece a strong, dignified presence.
About this piece
Based on a historic Zao Gongen image associated with a temple commissioned by an imperial vow, this work follows a model by sculptor Maruyama Meikei. It is reproduced as a bronze statue using the traditional wax-mold casting method of Takaoka copperware, then finished with lacquer coloration to differentiate textures across the face, robes, halo, and rocky base.
Cultural note
Zao Gongen belongs to a distinctly Japanese religious landscape shaped by centuries of interaction between Shinto and Buddhism, and is understood as a protective, forceful presence in mountain practice traditions. In Japan, images like this are commonly treated with care: placed thoughtfully, handled with clean hands, and kept in a tidy, calm space with a respectful intention.
