About this piece

This work is carved by hand from Kiso Hinoki (Japanese cypress) by a Japanese busshi (Buddhist sculptor). The model draws on a well-known Shakyamuni birth-form icon used across Buddhist sculpture traditions, here interpreted in an animal motif to create a quieter, more intimate presence while keeping the recognizable stance and gesture. The fine grain and lightness of hinoki suit the clean contours and warm surface, and each individually made piece shows subtle variations that reflect the sculptor’s handwork.
