A compact bronze image of Senju Kannon, modeled after a historic standing gilt-bronze figure associated in tradition with Minamoto no Yoshitsune of the late Heian period.

Despite its small scale, the sculpture carries a composed presence, with a distinctive arm arrangement—hands joined before the chest, a jeweled hand at the abdomen, and additional arms extending to either side—finished with a refined, even surface.

About this piece

This piece is cast in bronze and finished to emphasize clean contours and calm facial features. The model follows a “Yoshitsune tradition” reference: a historic standing gilt-bronze Senju Kannon said to have been enshrined and revered, and later remembered in connection with Minamoto no Yoshitsune. In Japanese collecting and devotional lineages, such small-scale reproductions exist to carry well-known temple and historical-image forms into a size suitable for a personal altar or quiet display, while preserving the characteristic posture and arm configuration of the source image.

Cultural note

In Japan, Kannon (Avalokiteśvara) images are widely approached as compassionate presences within Buddhist practice, and Senju Kannon in particular is understood at a high level as an embodiment of far-reaching care—“many hands” responding to many needs. Statues like this are typically treated with simple respect: placed in a clean, settled spot, oriented with intention, and handled with calm attention (for example, lifting with both hands and avoiding casual placement on the floor). Whether kept on a household altar (butsudan) or a quiet shelf, the emphasis is usually on sincerity and steadiness rather than display.
