A compact Japanese Buddha statue in hinoki cypress, created as a quiet presence for moments when words feel difficult.
Each piece is consecrated at Juryoin, Teigakusan Zenkoji Temple (定額山善光寺壽量院), and offered with the intention of purity, continuity, and peace.
About this piece
This work is hand-carved from hinoki (Japanese cypress) by a busshi (Buddhist sculptor) in Japan. The form follows established Buddhist sculptural conventions used for devotional images, made in continuity with temple-supported craft traditions. After carving, the statue is consecrated at Juryoin, Teigakusan Zenkoji Temple (定額山善光寺壽量院), linking the finished piece to a living temple setting and its customary rites.
Cultural note
In Japan, Buddhist images are generally regarded as objects of reverence rather than decoration, and are approached with a calm, respectful mindset. “Buddha” images may be used in homes or temples as a focus for reflection and remembrance, and for expressing feelings or wishes that are not easily put into words. Common etiquette includes keeping the figure in a clean, settled place, handling it with care (often with clean hands), and avoiding casual placement on the floor or in cluttered areas.
