A compact Buddha figure modeled with careful balance and fine surface detail, created to retain the presence of a full-size wooden original at a miniature scale.
Carved in tsuge (Japanese boxwood) and finished with refined gold paint applied by the Isumu workshop under the supervision of artist Chihiro Takamura, this piece brings contemporary production precision together with a lineage of Japanese colored woodcraft.
About this piece
This small wooden statue is made from tsuge (Japanese boxwood), chosen for its tight grain and suitability for crisp carving—especially in the face, which is carved to match the image of the reference statue. The form is produced using advanced molding and carving techniques developed through long experience in Buddhist statuemaking, with particular attention to achieving the same visual balance as the full-size model despite the approximately 10cm scale. The gold-painted finish is applied by the Isumu workshop, with the final look and tone supervised by Chihiro Takamura, a leading contemporary colorist in the tradition of Japanese polychrome sculpture. Takamura studied under Fuzan Hirano—known for color work connected to the revival of colored wood carving in modern Japan—and her supervision reflects that lineage and the continued practice of finishing wooden Buddhist images with carefully controlled color and gilding. The statue is presented in a special paulownia wood box with a foil-stamped logo.
Cultural note
In Japan, Buddhist images are generally regarded as devotional objects as well as works of art, and many households and temples treat them with quiet respect. A Buddha figure is commonly understood as an image of awakening and compassion, and it is often approached as something to be kept clean, placed thoughtfully, and handled with care. If you choose to display it, a simple, tidy setting is typical; people often avoid placing such images directly on the floor or in areas associated with disorder, and they may pause briefly in front of it with a calm intention (whether for reflection, gratitude, or remembrance). When moving or cleaning the piece, it is customary to use clean hands and a gentle touch, treating the image as something more than decoration.
