Kokūzō Bosatsu (Ākāśagarbha) is presented here in a compact sculptural form associated with Gumonjihō, an esoteric practice historically undertaken to cultivate learning, memory, and clarity.

Made in Japan, this small figure is sized for a desk, shelf, or personal altar space, offering a quiet, focused presence for those drawn to Kokūzō Bosatsu within the Shingon and broader Japanese Buddhist tradition.

About this piece

This is a Japanese-made Kokūzō Bosatsu figure cast in zinc alloy. The model follows established iconographic forms used for Kokūzō Bosatsu in Japanese Esoteric Buddhism, where images of this bodhisattva have been produced for devotional settings since at least the Nara period (710–794). The “Gumonjihō” designation reflects the long-standing tradition of creating Kokūzō images as principal figures for that practice, famously associated with the young Kōbō Daishi Kūkai at sites such as Mount Tairyū (Awa) and Muroto-zaki (Tosa).

Cultural note

In Japan, Buddhist images like Kokūzō Bosatsu are generally regarded as sacred representations rather than decoration, and are approached with a calm, respectful mindset. Kokūzō Bosatsu is especially revered in esoteric lineages as a figure of boundless wisdom and inexhaustible virtue, and is often associated with study and the steady cultivation of insight. Common etiquette includes placing the image in a clean, slightly elevated spot, keeping the area orderly, and handling it with clean hands and care; when not in use, it is typically stored thoughtfully rather than treated casually.
