Kokuzo Bosatsu (Akasagarbha) is revered as a bodhisattva associated with vast, boundless wisdom—likened to the open “void” that holds and contains all things.
This calm, antique-gold–finished figure is suited to a quiet corner of daily life, offering a steady visual reminder of learning, reflection, and compassionate intention.
About this piece
In Japanese Buddhist tradition, Kokuzo Bosatsu is said to preside over the virtues of wisdom and blessings associated with Dainichi Nyorai (Vairocana). He is widely worshipped as “the Buddha who bestows wisdom,” and devotion to Kokuzo Bosatsu was already widespread in the Nara period (710–794). The young Kobo Daishi (Kukai) is known for practicing the Kokuzo Gumonjiho with Kokuzo Bosatsu as the principal deity at Mount Tairyu in Awa and at Muroto-zaki in Tosa. Like the vastness of space, Kokuzo is described as possessing limitless goodness and wisdom, continuously extending mercy and compassion to support people’s aspirations.
