Kissyoten — Hokodera is a compact hinoki-wood figure modeled in the elegant style of a Tang-dynasty noblewoman, shown holding a wish-fulfilling jewel.
Based on a revered temple model, this piece offers a calm, refined presence—suited to those who prefer good fortune to feel balanced and steady rather than showy.
About this piece
This figure is crafted in hinoki (Japanese cypress) and produced as a small-scale sculptural reproduction. The design follows a wooden Kissyoten sculpture preserved at Hōkōdera, the head temple of the Hōkōdera school within the Rinzai Zen tradition in Shizuoka Prefecture. Hōkōdera is traditionally associated with its founder, Mubun Gensezenji (a son of Emperor Go-Daigo), and the temple’s long continuity helped preserve its cultural holdings. This form exists as a faithful temple-referenced model, keeping the visual features of the Hōkōdera image—its courtly attire and the held jewel—available in an approachable size.
Cultural note
In Japan, Kissyoten (Kichijōten) is understood as a benevolent figure associated with auspiciousness, beauty, and well-being, and images of her are often approached as dignified presences rather than decorative motifs. In temple and home settings, such figures are typically treated with simple respect: placed thoughtfully, kept clean, and handled with care—ideally with calm intention and without placing the image directly on the floor or in disorderly spaces. Many people choose a location that supports a settled mindset (a shelf, cabinet, or small altar area) and avoid casual treatment such as stacking items around it or turning it into a novelty display.
