This piece presents a distinctive, forceful form associated with Fudō Myōō, rendered with the clarity and surface refinement characteristic of Japanese Takaoka bronze work.

About this piece

This statue is produced through traditional bronze casting using Takaoka bronze sculpting techniques, then carefully finished and colored by skilled craftsmen; pure gold is applied by hand on top of the bronze. The model is based on a work by the renowned Buddhist sculptor Sohrin Matsuhisa (松久宗林), made with permission from Matsuhisa Sohrin Bussho (松久宗琳佛所), an organization established by Sohrin Matsuhisa and his father, the Kyoto Buddhist sculptor Hohrin Matsuhisa (松久朋琳). It is a replica of Sohrin Matsuhisa’s 1982 work, created within the long-standing Japanese workshop tradition of producing temple-quality Buddhist images—an approach reflected in the Matsuhisa lineage, known for statues made for major historic temples including Kōya-san, Hieizan, Narita-san, Shitennō-ji, Kinkaku-ji, and Kurama-dera.

In Japan, Fudō Myōō is widely venerated, especially within esoteric Buddhist traditions, and is understood as a compassionate figure associated with steadfastness and the removal of obstacles to awakening. Images of Fudō are commonly approached with a sincere, quiet intention—treated as devotional icons rather than as casual décor. A respectful mindset often includes placing the statue in a clean, settled spot, keeping the area orderly, and handling the figure with care (for example, with clean hands and without placing it directly on the floor). As this piece is made to order, its creation is part of the traditional craft process rather than a mass-produced item.
