A compact Dainichi Nyorai figure modeled after the distinctive style associated with Mokujiki Shōnin, knowCollectionsn for approachable, human warmth in his carvings.
This piece presents a simple crown and a clearly formed “wisdom” hand gesture held at the chest, giving the statue a quiet, composed presence in a small footprint.
About this piece
Carved in hinoki (Japanese cypress), this statue is made as a replica based on a Dainichi Nyorai image attributed to Mokujiki Shōnin, an Edo-period monk-sculptor who traveled widely and continued making Buddhist figures for everyday people in his home region of Yamanashi. The form follows the established model of Dainichi Nyorai within the Five Wisdom Tathagatas tradition, expressed here through Mokujiki’s characteristically direct, simplified treatment—especially in the crown and the firmly shaped hand gesture—reflecting a lineage of devotional folk carving rather than courtly atelier refinement.
Cultural note
In Japan, Buddhist images are generally regarded as objects of reverence (sonzō) that make the presence of a Buddha or bodhisattva “available” for contemplation and veneration, whether in temples or in the home. Dainichi Nyorai (Mahāvairocana) is understood at a high level as the central Buddha in esoteric (Mikkyō) traditions, associated with the all-encompassing Buddha-body and the source from which other awakened qualities are expressed. When keeping such an image, a respectful approach is typically simple and steady: place it somewhere clean and settled, avoid treating it as casual décor, and handle it with clean hands and a calm intention.
