Amitabha — Raigo-in is a Japanese-style wooden statue of Amida Buddha, shown with a calm, unadorned appearance and a welcoming hand gesture associated with raigō imagery.

Carved from hinoki (Japanese cypress) and finished to evoke an antique feel, it offers a quiet presence suited to a home altar, a meditation space, or a thoughtful interior display.

About this piece

This piece is made through wood carving in hinoki, with a surface finish intentionally aged to suggest an antique character. The model follows the established Raigo-in (raigō) form of Amitabha/Amida, a long-standing iconographic type developed within Japanese Buddhist statue-making traditions and repeated by workshops over generations. The unadorned body—without jewelry or accessories—reflects a canonical Buddha presentation, and the hand pose is rendered to match the traditional Raigo-in format that has been produced for devotional settings and temple-related practice.

Cultural note

In Japan, images of Amida (Amitabha) are especially closely associated with Pure Land Buddhism (Jōdo traditions), where Amida is revered as the central Buddha and approached through trust and recitation of the name (nembutsu). Raigō imagery, in particular, expresses the idea of compassionate welcome and guidance. In many households and temples, such figures are treated as objects of reverence: placed thoughtfully, kept clean, and handled with calm attention—often with clean hands and a sense of respect rather than casual decoration. Even when displayed as art, it is common to avoid placing the figure directly on the floor and to give it a stable, elevated spot that feels appropriate.
