The model is the "Standing Statues of Kongo Rikishi," a masterpiece and national treasure of the Kamakura period undertaken by Buddhist sculptors Unkei, Kaikei, and others. By serving Siddhartha Gautama, the god "Shukongojin" split into two bodies and became Kongo Rikishi. "Agyo," whose mouth is open in a form to represent "a," and "Ungyo," whose mouth is closed in a form to represent "un," are a pair of two figures who strike daunting poses in front of, and to right and left of, the gate of a Buddhist temple. They are regarded as protecting Buddhism.
