2023 marks the 1,250th anniversary of the birth of Kobo-Daishi (Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism in Japan. For this historic occasion, we researched and studied various images and documents circulated throughout the world, listened to the opinions of the priests of the Shingon sect. The sculpture, which took about 3 years to complete, depicts the immovable figure of the 8th partiarch of Shingon Buddhism, who was ordained by Ajari Keikatsu in Tang China to spread the teachings of Shingon Buddhism in Japan.
The original statue, sculpted by Buddhist statue specialist Yooku Fujita (藤田燿憶), shows eyes with a strong determination to proselytize and full of vitality, and Chirei Takamura (篁千礼), a coloring specialist, has created a surprising realism by coloring the statue in memory of that time.
