Tentoki (天燈鬼) — Takamura is a compact wooden figure finished with refined gold paint, created to preserve the presence and balance of a larger reference statue in a small, display-friendly size.
Carved in tsuge (Japanese boxwood) for crisp detail—especially in the face—this piece is presented in a special paulownia wood box with a foil-stamped miniature Buddha logo.
About this piece
This work is carved from tsuge (Japanese boxwood), a dense fine-grained wood chosen for precise sculpted detail, and finished with gold paint applied by the Isumu workshop under the supervision of Chihiro Takamura. The model follows the proportions and “molding balance” of an actual Tentoki statue, with the challenge of translating that presence into a figure of roughly 10cm. Takamura—trained in the lineage of colorist Fuzan Hirano and recognized as a leading figure in contemporary Buddhist statue coloring—oversees the surface finish, continuing a tradition of polychrome and gilded sculpture that was long standard in Japan.
Cultural note
In Japan, Buddhist images are generally approached as revered icons as well as works of devotional art, and they are treated with care and a quiet sense of respect in the home. Tentoki is one of the guardian figures associated with temple settings, often understood at a high level as a protective attendant within a larger Buddhist world. If you choose to display this piece, it is customary to place it somewhere clean and stable, avoid placing it directly on the floor, and handle it with clean hands and a considerate mindset—more like an image to be respected than a casual ornament.
