A compact Japanese figure of Shinran Shonin (1173–1263), rendered with a quiet, composed presence suited to a small shelf, desk, or cabinet.
Made in Japan in zinc alloy, this piece is designed as a durable, finely formed representation of a historical Buddhist teacher whose image is widely recognized within the Jōdo Shinshū tradition.
About this piece
This statue is produced in Japan using metal casting in zinc alloy, then finished to bring out the contours of the robes and seated posture at a small scale. The model follows established Japanese iconographic conventions for depicting Shinran Shonin as a revered teacher, a form that developed through temple portrait traditions and later devotional statuary so that followers could keep a consistent, recognizable likeness in the home or at a family altar.
Cultural note
In Japan, images of Shinran Shonin are commonly treated as respectful portraits of a foundational teacher of Jōdo Shinshū (Shin Buddhism). At a high level, Shinran is remembered for emphasizing reliance on Amida Buddha’s vow and the nembutsu as the heart of the tradition. When kept in the home, such figures are typically approached with a calm, sincere attitude—placed neatly, kept clean, and handled with care (often with clean hands), avoiding casual treatment or placing the image directly on the floor. Many people choose a stable, slightly elevated spot where it can be regarded with quiet attention.

This is recommended if you want your statue to be more than an object — a presence you can practice with. This option is not required.
