Carved from Japanese boxwood (tsuge) for crisp detail—especially in the face—this piece reflects the accumulated know-how of Butuzou World’s statuemaking, with the final gold finish applied by the Isumu workshop under the supervision of Chihiro Takamura.
About this piece
This statue is a small-format wood carving made from Japanese boxwood (tsuge), chosen for its fine grain and suitability for precise sculpted detail. Achieving a molding and carving balance comparable to the reference “actual statue” at roughly 10 cm scale was treated as a central technical challenge, with particular attention given to the facial carving. The gold-painted finish was executed by the Isumu workshop under the supervision of Chihiro Takamura, an artist recognized as a leading contemporary figure in the coloring of Buddhist statues and a legitimate successor in the lineage of colorist Fuzan Hirano (connected to the revival of colored wood carving associated with sculptor Denchu Hiragushi). This work exists within the tradition of Japanese colored Buddhist statuary, presented here as a carefully made miniature piece and housed in a special paulownia wood box with a foil-stamped logo.
Cultural note
In Japan, Buddhist images are commonly regarded as devotional icons within temple and home settings, approached with a quiet, respectful mindset rather than as casual decoration. A Buddha figure broadly represents awakening and compassion, and many people treat such images as a focus for reflection, gratitude, or remembrance. When keeping a statue at home, it is customary to place it in a clean, calm spot (often slightly elevated), avoid placing it directly on the floor, and handle it with clean hands and steady attention. If you need to move it, doing so gently—and avoiding placing other objects on top of it—is considered a respectful norm.

This is recommended if you want your statue to be more than an object — a presence you can practice with. This option is not required.
