A compact Raijin figure finished in refined gold paint, created to preserve the presence and balance of a full-scale model in a small, display-friendly size.

Carved in Japanese boxwood (tsuge) and presented in a special paulownia wood box, this piece reflects careful attention to facial expression and crisp detail, with the final gold-painted finish carried out under the supervision of Chihiro Takamura.

About this piece

This is a small-scale wooden statue carved from tsuge (Japanese boxwood), a material valued for its tight grain and suitability for fine detail. The form was developed using long-standing Buddhist statue-making know-how to achieve a molding and carving balance comparable to an “actual statue” even at roughly 10cm in height, with particular emphasis on the face. The gold-painted finish is applied by the Isumu workshop under the supervision of Chihiro Takamura, a leading contemporary colorist in the lineage of Fuzan Hirano; Takamura trained under Hirano after studying oil painting and later established the Chihiro Takamura Painting Institute. This work belongs to a collection created to revive the tradition of colored wooden statuary and to make that level of finishing accessible in a smaller format, and it is supplied in a dedicated paulownia box with a foil-stamped logo.

Cultural note

In Japan, images of Raijin (the thunder deity) are widely known through temple and shrine art, folding screens, and architectural decoration, where he appears as a powerful figure associated with thunder and storm clouds. Depending on setting, such figures can be appreciated as part of Japan’s religious iconography and also as classical cultural motifs. When keeping an image like this, a respectful approach is to treat it as a sacred-form artwork: place it somewhere clean and settled, avoid placing it directly on the floor, and handle it with calm attention (clean hands, no casual tossing or stacking). Many people also choose a location where it can be viewed quietly, rather than as a purely decorative object.

This is recommended if you want your statue to be more than an object — a presence you can practice with. This option is not required.
