Juni Shinsho — Isumu is a series of miniature wooden figures modeled after the Twelve Divine Generals, based on Important Cultural Properties preserved at a temple in Nara.
Carved at an exceptionally small scale (under 10 cm), each figure preserves the dynamic posture, expressive limbs, and distinctive zodiac animal head associated with the Kamakura-period (1185–1333) originals, with a refined gold-toned finish.
About this piece
Each statue is carved from dense Japanese boxwood (tsuge), chosen for its ability to hold crisp detail at very small scale—especially in facial features and fine contours. The series follows historical models of the Twelve Divine Generals from the Kamakura period, referencing Important Cultural Properties in Nara; translating their strong movement and individuality into sub-10 cm figures required advanced molding techniques and careful sculptural judgment so the presence of the originals would not be lost when reduced. The gold coloring is applied by the Isumu workshop under the supervision of Chihiro Takamura, maintaining a consistent, historically sensitive finish across the collection.
Cultural note
In Japan, images of the Twelve Divine Generals (Jūni Shinshō) are understood within Buddhist temple culture as protective attendants associated with Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha), often presented as a set of twelve with zodiac-linked identities. Such figures are approached as devotional images rather than decoration: they are typically placed in a clean, settled spot, handled with calm attention, and treated with basic respect (for example, avoiding placing them directly on the floor or in cluttered areas). Many people also choose to keep the viewing direction and surrounding space orderly as a simple expression of reverence.
