A compact Hotei figure carved in hinoki (Japanese cypress), shaped with rounded proportions and a relaxed, open smile.

The soft grain of hinoki and the smooth, continuous curves give this piece a gentle presence that sits comfortably on a shelf, desk, or entryway surface—an easy-to-live-with form for everyday spaces.

About this piece

This is a carved wooden statue made from hinoki (Japanese cypress), finished to emphasize the wood’s fine, quiet grain and the rounded contours of the Hotei model. The design follows the widely recognized East Asian “laughing monk” iconography that has been transmitted through temple imagery and folk-art traditions, and is commonly produced today as a small-scale devotional or decorative carving. This version is made in China, using contemporary workshop carving methods to create a smooth, approachable surface and stable, freestanding form.

Cultural note

In Japan, Hotei (布袋) is commonly counted among the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin) and is warmly associated with good fortune, contentment, and an openhearted spirit. Images of Hotei are often treated with simple respect—kept clean, placed thoughtfully, and handled with calm attention rather than casually. Many people choose a spot that feels welcoming (such as an entryway, living area, or a personal shelf), and avoid placing the figure directly on the floor or in a cluttered, neglected corner; the intention is to give the image a dignified, cared-for place in the home.
