A calm, finely modeled Buddha figure created in Japan after a work by the renowned Kyoto sculptor Hohrin Matsuhisa (松久朋琳, 1901–1987).
Cast in zinc alloy with a steady, balanced presence, this piece offers a clear view of the sculptural language associated with Matsuhisa’s approach—simple, focused, and made to be lived with.
About this piece
This statue is produced as a metal casting in zinc alloy, created from a model based on one of Hohrin Matsuhisa’s works. Matsuhisa began carving Buddhist images in childhood and went on to produce thousands of statues over his lifetime, including works for major temples such as Shitennōji, Kurama-dera, and Hokke-ji. The form follows the tradition of workshop-based reproduction and study, where respected historical models are translated into durable materials so their proportions and surface treatment can be appreciated in a new setting.
Cultural note
In Japan, Buddhist images are generally regarded as objects of reverence rather than decoration, and they are approached with a quiet, considerate attitude. A Buddha figure broadly represents awakening and serves as a focal point for reflection and gratitude in many households and temple spaces. If you choose to keep this image at home, it is customary to place it in a clean, respectful spot, avoid placing it directly on the floor, and handle it with care (clean hands, no casual stacking with unrelated items). Many people also avoid positioning it in places associated with disorder or strong impurities, such as directly beside trash bins or in cramped, cluttered corners.
