Sho Kannon by Kyoto-based sculptor Yozan Miura is a quiet, contemporary wooden figure grounded in classical Japanese Buddhist carving.

Carved from Kiso Hinoki (Japanese cypress), the work is defined by clear lines and a gentle, composed expression—present without excess, and made to sit naturally within a lived-in space.

About this piece

This is a hand-carved wooden sculpture of Shō Kannon, made from carefully selected Kiso Hinoki. It holds particular provenance as the first sculpture Miura created after establishing his independent practice, bringing together his formal training and an emerging personal approach. The Shō Kannon form is a foundational model within the tradition—chosen for its directness and restraint—making it a natural starting point for a sculptor marking a new chapter while staying closely aligned with established workshop standards and historical reference forms.

Cultural note

In Japan, images of Kannon (Kanzeon Bosatsu) are widely respected across Buddhist traditions as compassionate presences, often approached with a quiet, personal sincerity rather than display. Shō Kannon is understood as a straightforward, essential form of Kannon—less about spectacle and more about steadiness. When keeping such an image at home, many people treat it as something to be placed thoughtfully, kept clean, and handled with calm attention—avoiding casual treatment, placing it above floor level when possible, and orienting it in a way that feels respectful within the room.
