A compact Shingon-shu sanson miniature shrine cabinet featuring three revered figures together: Dainichi Nyorai, Fudo Myoo, and Kobo Daishi.

Made in Japan from hinoki (Japanese cypress), the doors open to reveal solemn figures finished in an antique gold tone, set within a rustic, hand-finished cabinet sized for a small shelf or desk.

About this piece

This miniature shrine cabinet was created in 2023 to commemorate the 1250th anniversary of the birth of Kobo Daishi, founder of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. The work follows the Shingon tradition of enshrining a “sanson” (triad): Dainichi Nyorai at the center, with Fudo Myoo—regarded within the tradition as a manifestation of Dainichi—and Kobo Daishi. Crafted in hinoki Japanese cypress and finished in an antique gold tone for the figures, it is presented as a small, opening zushi-style cabinet. This piece has been blessed through prayers by monks of the Kongo Sanmai-in temple complex on Mount Koya.

Cultural note

In Japan, images such as Dainichi Nyorai, Fudo Myoo, and Kobo Daishi are approached as devotional icons within Buddhist practice, especially in Shingon (esoteric) contexts, where triads and shrine cabinets are used to frame a focused relationship with the figures. At a high level, Dainichi Nyorai is understood as the central Buddha in Shingon thought, Fudo Myoo as a powerful protector figure, and Kobo Daishi as the tradition’s founding master. When kept in the home, a common respectful approach is to place the cabinet in a clean, calm spot, open it intentionally when paying respects, and avoid casual handling; if it must be moved, it is typically done with clean hands and a mindful attitude.

You can choose an option to consecrate this statue before shipping from Japan. If you select this option, we will bring the statue for an eye-opening ceremony and ship it to you after the ritual is complete.

This is recommended if you want your statue to be more than an object — a presence you can practice with.
