A compact Fudō Myō-ō carving by artist Goh Sakai, presented as a Dragon-year zodiac ornament with a clear, dignified presence.
Carved in hinoki with a five-colored rayon cord, this piece brings together Sakai’s distinctive sculptural style and the traditional Japanese custom of welcoming the year with an auspicious motif.
About this piece
This work is a carved wooden ornament made from hinoki (Japanese cypress) and finished with a five-colored rayon string. The model is based on an original sculpture by Goh Sakai of the art unit Hotokeya Sakai, known for the Neko Butsu series and other contemporary Buddhist-inspired carvings. The form exists within the Japanese tradition of zodiac-year ornaments—here, the Year of the Dragon—interpreted through the figure of Fudō Myō-ō and rendered with the auspicious color accents often seen in Buddhist sculpture. This specific piece is noted as having received the blessings of a purification and fortune-invoking goma prayer at Mikamo Fudō Temple.
Cultural note
In Japan, images of Buddhist deities are commonly approached as objects of reverence, whether in temples, home altars, or quiet personal spaces. Fudō Myō-ō (Acala) is widely regarded as a protective figure associated with steadfastness and the removal of obstacles, and goma fire rituals are a well-known practice connected to this tradition. If you choose to display this piece, it is customary to place it somewhere clean and settled, to handle it with calm attention, and to avoid treating it as a casual decoration; many people take a moment of quiet respect when placing or moving such an image.
