A small, carefully carved “Cat Buddha” interpretation of Fudō Myōō by Japanese Buddhist image maker Gou Sakai, made to sit close at hand as a quiet, protective presence.
This piece is also linked to the Japanese custom of personal guardian deities associated with the Chinese zodiac—Fudō Myōō is traditionally connected with those born in the Year of the Rooster—and it features a distinctive tail detail inspired by the idea of a “lucky cat” with a curved tip.
About this piece
This statue is a fully hand-carved and hand-finished wooden work by Gou Sakai, a busshi (Buddhist sculptor) known for the Cat Buddha series, which reimagines classical Buddhist forms through the familiar posture and expression of a cat. The carving and coloring are completed by the artist from start to finish, and the work is presented in a paulownia storage box bearing the artist’s handwritten inscription. The series exists as a contemporary continuation of Japanese devotional sculpture-making—rooted in established iconographic models—while offering a gentle, approachable form that reflects the long-standing closeness of cats to everyday life in Japan.
Cultural note
In Japan, images of Buddhas and myōō (wisdom kings) are commonly treated as objects of respect, whether in temples or in the home, and are approached with a calm, sincere mindset rather than as mere decoration. Fudō Myōō (Acala) is widely regarded as a steadfast protector figure in Japanese Esoteric Buddhism, often depicted in a wrathful form that expresses uncompromising resolve to overcome obstacles and delusion. When keeping such an image at home, many people choose a clean, settled place, avoid placing it directly on the floor, and handle it with clean hands and attentive care, especially when moving or storing it.

You can choose an option to consecrate this statue before shipping from Japan. If you select this option, we will bring the statue for an eye-opening ceremony and ship it to you after the ritual is complete.
This is recommended if you want your statue to be more than an object — a presence you can practice with. This option is not required.
