A small, quietly expressive carving of a cat seated in a zazen posture—back straight, tail still, and presence unforced.

Made from Kiso Hinoki (Japanese cypress), this piece brings a gentle sense of pause to a shelf, desk, or alcove without asking for attention.

About this piece

This statue is hand-carved in Japan by a Busshi (Buddhist sculptor) from Kiso Hinoki, a prized cypress traditionally used for fine religious sculpture. The “Zazen Cat” form follows a contemporary workshop model that adapts the seated meditation posture into an animal figure, created as a small-scale devotional-style carving meant to be appreciated up close—where the clean silhouette, compact proportions, and crisp edges of the posture can be felt as much as seen.

Cultural note

In Japan, Buddhist images are generally approached as objects of reverence rather than decoration, even when the design is playful or modern. A zazen-seated figure naturally echoes Zen practice, where seated meditation is central; many people relate such imagery to steadiness, simplicity, and the everyday discipline of returning to the present. If you choose to display it, a respectful approach is to place it in a clean, calm spot, avoid putting it directly on the floor, and handle it with care and intention (for example, with clean hands and without treating it casually). It is also common to keep the area around such images tidy and uncluttered as a basic sign of regard.

Consecration (Eye-opening Ceremony)

You can choose an option to consecrate this statue before shipping from Japan. If you select this option, we will bring the statue for an eye-opening ceremony and ship it to you after the ritual is complete.

This is recommended if you want your statue to be more than an object — a presence you can practice with. This option is not required.
