A large-format Tobatsu Bishamonten figure with an uncommon, “western realms” style: golden chain armor, a tall crown, and a poised stance supported by the outstretched palms of Chitennyo.

Modeled after the National Treasure “Wooden Statue of Tobatsu Bishamonten” associated with Toji Temple, this 60cm piece is designed to emphasize crisp facial expression, posture, and the layered detail of the armor for a strong, sculptural presence.

About this piece

This statue is produced by Isumu using polystone casting and finishing to achieve fine surface detail across the armor, crown, and figure base. The design follows the well-known Tobatsu Bishamonten form—distinct from more typical Bishamonten images—whose prototype is preserved as a National Treasure at Toji Temple and is traditionally linked to the Rajomon Gate at the entrance to Heian-kyo. Isumu’s S-Class interpretation is built from detailed reference data and scaled to 60cm, with particular attention to the facial expression, stance, and the “exotic” character of the armor that defines this historic model; the form itself exists as a long-copied tradition, especially in Kyoto and Nara, where this specific type has been reproduced for centuries.

Cultural note

In Japan, Bishamonten (Vaisravana) is widely regarded as a guardian figure within Buddhist temple culture and is often approached as a protector associated with safeguarding communities and upholding order. Tobatsu Bishamonten is a particular variant remembered through stories of appearing at a gate to repel enemies, and it is valued for its distinctive, nonstandard iconography. When keeping an image like this at home, many people treat it as they would a temple image: placing it in a clean, respectful spot, avoiding casual handling, and maintaining a calm, considerate attitude toward the figure and its surroundings.

Consecration (Eye-opening Ceremony)

You can choose an option to consecrate this statue before shipping from Japan. If you select this option, we will bring the statue for an eye-opening ceremony and ship it to you after the ritual is complete.

This is recommended if you want your statue to be more than an object — a presence you can practice with.
