Senju Kannon is a large-format figure with an unusually complete array of arms, fanning outward and blending into the halo for a single, unified silhouette.

The surface is finished to feel timeworn rather than bright: multiple layers of gold leaf are applied and then intentionally peeled back, creating depth, soft variation, and a quiet sense of age across the form.

About this piece

This work is produced in polystone using a molded casting process, then finished with extensive gold-leaf layering and controlled removal to achieve a subdued, aged patina. The model follows a Japanese National Treasure preserved in Nara, and this edition is presented as one of the most elaborate pieces in the Isumu line, created to reproduce the original’s complex structure—nearly the full thousand arms arranged in a radiating fan, the eleven faces, and the small figure above the head—within a contemporary replica format.

Cultural note

In Japan, Kannon (Avalokiteśvara) images are approached as devotional icons within Buddhist practice, commonly associated with compassion and attentive care for beings; Senju Kannon, in particular, expresses this ideal through the many arms and faces as a visual language of wide-reaching aid. When kept in a home setting, such figures are generally treated with respect: placed in a clean, calm spot, oriented with intention rather than as casual décor, and handled with clean hands and a steady, considerate manner. Many people avoid placing sacred images directly on the floor or in disorderly areas, and instead choose a stable shelf or dedicated space that feels appropriate.
