A compact Kannon figure finished with refined gold paint under the supervision of Chihiro Takamura, created to preserve the balance and presence of a full-scale model in a hand-sized work.

Carved from tsuge (Japanese boxwood) for crisp detail—especially in the face—this piece reflects Butuzou World’s small-scale statuemaking know-how, with gold painting applied by the Isumu workshop under Ms. Takamura’s direction.

About this piece

This is a small wooden Kannon statue carved from tsuge (Japanese boxwood), chosen for its fine grain and suitability for precise carving. The sculpted form is made to match the proportions of an “actual statue” model, with particular attention to the facial carving. The surface is finished with gold paint, applied by the Isumu workshop under the supervision of Chihiro Takamura. Ms. Takamura (b. 1962, Tokyo) trained under Fuzan Hirano, a master colorist in the lineage of modern revivals of Japanese polychrome wood sculpture; she is recognized as a leading figure in Buddhist statue coloring today. This work belongs to a collection developed to bring traditional colored-wood finishing back into contemporary production, translating established sculptural models into a small format without losing their intended balance.

Cultural note

In Japan, images of Kannon (Kanzeon Bosatsu) are widely approached as compassionate presences—figures associated with listening to suffering and offering relief—found in temples, home altars, and pilgrimage culture. Such statues are generally treated as devotional images rather than decoration: people tend to place them in a clean, settled spot, orient them with care, and handle them calmly and respectfully. It is also common to avoid placing sacred images directly on the floor, and to keep the surrounding area tidy as a simple expression of sincerity.

Consecration (Eye-opening Ceremony)

You can choose an option to consecrate this statue before shipping from Japan. If you select this option, we will bring the statue for an eye-opening ceremony and ship it to you after the ritual is complete.

This is recommended if you want your statue to be more than an object — a presence you can practice with.
