Fugen Bosatsu — Koshuun is a compact sculptural figure showing Fugen Bosatsu seated on a lotus atop a grounded, powerfully modeled elephant.

The elephant’s crescent-moon-shaped eye and thick, firmly planted feet give the composition a calm stability, while Fugen Bosatsu is rendered with gentle, rounded eyes and hands joined in gasshō, seated in the cross-legged kekkafuza posture.

About this piece

This piece is a polystone reproduction made by molding and casting, based on a historical wooden image of Fugen Bosatsu riding an elephant that was once worshipped at the Suwa Upper Shrines of Suwa Taisha until the first year of the Meiji era. The original is associated with the Kamakura period; during Oda Nobunaga’s invasion of the Suwa region, the upper portion—where the Bosatsu figure had been—was destroyed. It is believed that Kōshun, a Buddhist sculptor of the Kei school, later recreated the form that became the reference for this model, preserving the distinctive elephant and the serene seated figure above.

Cultural note

In Japan, images of bosatsu (bodhisattvas) are approached as devotional figures within Buddhist practice and temple culture, and they are commonly treated with quiet respect in both religious and personal settings. Fugen Bosatsu (Samantabhadra) is broadly understood as a bosatsu associated with practice and vows, often paired with Shaka (Shakyamuni) in Japanese iconography. When keeping such an image, many people choose a clean, settled place, handle it with care, and maintain a mindful attitude—treating it less as décor and more as an object that invites composure and reflection.
