A compact Amida Nyorai figure modeled after the distinctive style of Mokujiki Shōnin, known for a gentle, slightly tilted expression and an approachable, human warmth.

Carved in hinoki (Japanese cypress), this piece offers a quiet presence on a shelf, desk, or small altar space—simple in scale, yet carefully shaped to echo a well-known Edo-period sculptural voice.

About this piece

This is a hinoki wood statue made as a replica after an Amida Nyorai image associated with Mokujiki Shōnin (Edo period), the itinerant monk-sculptor who traveled widely and produced accessible devotional carvings for ordinary people, including works made for his home region of Yamanashi. The model follows the tradition of Mokujiki’s straightforward carving style—rounded forms and a softly smiling, slightly angled face—created to be familiar and welcoming rather than formal or courtly.

Cultural note

In Japan, images of Amida Nyorai (Amitābha) are widely respected within Buddhist practice, especially in traditions that look to Amida as a compassionate Buddha connected with rebirth in the Pure Land. Such figures are generally approached as objects of reverence rather than decoration: placed thoughtfully, kept clean, and handled with calm attention. Many households treat a Buddhist image as something to face when offering a brief moment of gratitude or reflection, and it is customary to avoid placing it directly on the floor or in a casual, cluttered spot.
