This statue is the replica of the original statue that is designated as the Japanese national treasure. The original statue was created during the Kamakura period (1185-1333) by Kouben, one of the sons of Unkei, the famous Buddhist sculptor
Tentoki and Ryutoki are both Oni (ogre). They paid a penance and took refuge in the Buddha to be given the role of holding a pair of lanterns. Similar to Kongo Rrikishi (Deva King) statues, the pair consists of the “a” and “un” forms. These humorous statues are masterpieces of realistic and dynamic compositions
