Seishi Bosatsu is presented here as a calm, upright figure with hands joined in prayer, finished with an intentionally antique feeling that brings out the contours and presence of the carving.

Carved from hinoki (Japanese cypress), this piece is sized for a shelf, desk, or small altar setting, offering a quiet focal point whether displayed as interior art or kept as a devotional image.

About this piece

This statue is a wood-carved work made from hinoki and finished to evoke an aged, timeworn surface. The model follows established Japanese Buddhist iconography of Seishi Bosatsu as an attendant bodhisattva of Amida Nyorai, commonly shown alongside Kannon Bosatsu in Pure Land-related imagery and in mandala traditions transmitted to Japan (including lineages associated with Kūkai’s introduction of esoteric materials). This form exists because Seishi Bosatsu is traditionally created as part of a paired or triad arrangement centered on Amida, and also as a standalone image reflecting that long-standing sculptural and pictorial convention.

Cultural note

In Japan, Buddhist images such as Seishi Bosatsu are generally approached as sacred representations rather than decoration alone, even when displayed in a modern home. Seishi Bosatsu (Seishi/Daiseishi) is widely understood as embodying wisdom and is especially known as one of Amida Nyorai’s attendants, often appearing in Pure Land contexts alongside Kannon. A respectful approach is to place the figure in a clean, settled spot, orient it thoughtfully, and handle it with clean hands and a quiet mindset; many people avoid placing such images directly on the floor or in areas associated with disorder.
