Dainichi Nyorai is the highest ranking Buddha in Mikkyo (Japanese Tantric Buddhism) born around 1300 years ago in India. In Japan, it was spread by Kobo-Daishi, Kukai and Saicho and was rapidly popularized in the Heian period. The "Dainichi" in Dainichi Nyorai means "great sun" and it is said that its presence is the universe itself. Unlike the other Nyorai, it is unique in that the deity looks glamorous, wearing crowns and jewels.
"Dainichi Nyorai" is one of the significant religious concepts in Japanese Buddhism. While this concept holds particular importance in specific sects of Buddhism known as Esoteric Buddhism or "密教" (Mikkyo), it also has an influence on general Buddhism.
Dainichi Nyorai is considered a universal and supreme Buddha. Its name, "大日本" (Dai-Nichi-Japan), derives from "大日," which signifies "great day" or "great light." This name symbolizes the completeness, sacredness, and wisdom of Dainichi Nyorai as a universal presence.
Dainichi Nyorai is typically depicted emitting golden or blue light and surrounded by four lotus petals. These lotus petals symbolize enlightenment and purity, representing Dainichi Nyorai's state of enlightenment and liberation. It is also understood as a being filled with infinite compassion and love, assisting people in finding relief from suffering and attaining happiness and stability.
The worship and understanding of Dainichi Nyorai are particularly crucial in Esoteric Buddhism. Esoteric Buddhism is a sect that deepens the teachings and practices of Buddhism, offering secret teachings to facilitate individual spiritual growth. Dainichi Nyorai serves as a symbolic presence for practitioners of Esoteric Buddhism to understand their true selves and promote inner purification and awakening.
In general Buddhism, Dainichi Nyorai is also respected as a universal presence, teaching people the importance of virtuous deeds, compassion, and wisdom. Its presence is one of great significance within Buddhism and is highly respected as spiritual guidance by many individuals.
