A bronze Buddha statue made in Takaoka, Japan—an area long recognized for cast metalwork and Buddhist sculptural production.

Crafted using traditional Takaoka bronze sculpting techniques, this piece is formed through careful molding and casting, then finished and colored by skilled hands for a balanced, enduring presence.

About this piece

This statue is produced by bronze casting in the Takaoka tradition, with the work proceeding through molding, casting, finishing, and coloring by craftspeople who inherit established workshop methods. Takaoka’s metalworking lineage is commonly traced to 1611, when Toshinaga Maeda (前田利長), second lord of the Kaga fiefdom (加賀藩), invited seven casting masters from Tannan in Kawachi Province (河内国丹南郡) to establish a foundry in Kanayamachi (金屋町). While early efforts centered on iron, copper casting flourished by the mid-Edo period and continued to develop through the Meiji era, when Takaoka works were exhibited and gained international recognition. In 1975, Takaoka copperware received primary designation as one of Japan’s Nationally Designated Traditional Craft Products—an institutional recognition that reflects the continuity of this craft tradition.

Cultural note

In Japan, Buddha images are generally regarded as objects of reverence connected to Buddhist temples and home altars (butsudan), and they are approached with a quiet, respectful mindset rather than as casual decoration. At a broad level, a Buddha figure represents awakening and serves as a focal point for remembrance, reflection, and devotional practice depending on the household or temple tradition. Common etiquette includes placing the image in a clean, stable location, handling it with care (often with clean hands), and avoiding disrespectful placement such as on the floor or in areas associated with disorder
