This Bishamonten is a carefully made figure with a steady, commanding presence, defined by a dark, grounded body and sharply rendered white eyes.
Based on close study of the original, the gaze is built up through multiple layers of pigment to achieve a focused intensity that reads as vigilant and composed rather than forceful.
About this piece
This statue is produced in polystone using a molded casting process, then finished with detailed paintwork. It is a faithful reproduction of a Bishamonten attributed to the Kamakura-period master sculptor Unkei, originally carved in 1186 and later designated a Japanese National Treasure in 2013. The model follows the established temple tradition of the Four Heavenly Kings as guardian figures, and this edition reflects Isumu’s research-driven approach—most notably in the eyes, where pigment is layered more than six times to recreate the original’s distinctive, penetrating expression.
Cultural note
In Japan, images of Bishamonten (Tamonten/Vaiśravaṇa) are understood within Buddhist temple culture as protective guardian figures, commonly associated with the Four Heavenly Kings who watch over the world and uphold order. At a high level, Bishamonten is regarded as a steadfast protector—linked with discipline and the resolve to face adversity—rather than as an emblem of aggression. When kept in a home or personal space, such figures are typically approached with a quiet, respectful intention: placed thoughtfully, kept clean, and handled with care (for example, avoiding casual contact with the face and treating the image as more than décor).
