Tentoki and Ryutoki — A-Un Pair is a faithful replica of a Japanese National Treasure, celebrated for its realistic, dynamic carving and unusually warm, human presence.

The two figures form an a-un pair, echoing the paired guardians seen at temple gates: one expressing “a” (the beginning) and the other “un” (the end). Their forward-leaning stances, lively faces, and humorous energy make this set feel animated without being severe.

About this piece

This work is a replica based on an original statue designated as a Japanese National Treasure. The original pair was carved in the Kamakura period (1185–1333) by Kōben, one of the sons of the renowned sculptor Unkei, and is known for its masterful realism and sense of movement. This edition is produced in polystone, using a molded process to reproduce the defining features of the historical model—its expressive faces, taut musculature, and the balanced “a-un” pairing—so the composition can be appreciated as a crafted object in its own right.

Cultural note

In Japan, images like Tentoki and Ryutoki are understood within a temple setting as attendant or guardian figures associated with protecting and supporting the Buddhist space; here they are traditionally described as oni who, after repentance, take on the role of holding lanterns. More broadly, such figures are approached as religious images (butsuzō) rather than decoration: they are treated with a quiet respect, placed thoughtfully, and handled with clean hands and a calm mindset. Many people avoid placing them directly on the floor or in casual, cluttered areas, and instead choose a stable, slightly elevated spot where the figures can be regarded without being treated as ordinary objects.

This is recommended if you want your statue to be more than an object — a presence you can practice with.
