A distinctive Fudō Myōō figure by master sculptor Go Sakai, expressed through the form of a limbless white snake and finished with carefully placed symbolic details.

At approximately 16 cm tall, it has a strong presence while remaining easy to display. The Kurikara sword held in the mouth, the lasso formed at the tail, the Tenchi eye, and the lotus on the head are all rendered with crisp carving and clear color accents, with a five-colored rayon cord completing the piece.

About this piece

Carved in hinoki (Japanese cypress) and finished with painted details, this work is based on an original model created by Go Sakai of the art unit Hotoke-ya Sakai, known for contemporary interpretations of Buddhist imagery (including the Neko-Butsu series). The design intentionally merges Fudō Myōō’s attributes into a white-snake form—an established motif in Japanese good-fortune ornament traditions—resulting in a compact sculptural object that balances charm with a commanding silhouette. This piece is consecrated at Mikamo Fudōson, a temple known as a place of devotion since the Manyō era, and is blessed through goma fire rituals.

Cultural note

In Japan, images of Fudō Myōō (Acala) are approached as protective Buddhist icons—often associated with steadfastness, discipline, and the resolve to overcome obstacles. White snake imagery is also widely treated with respect as an auspicious presence, commonly linked in folk belief to prosperity and renewal. When keeping such an image at home, many people choose a clean, calm place, handle it with care (clean hands, no casual tossing or stepping over it), and maintain a simple sense of intention and gratitude rather than treating it as mere décor.
