A compact Maitreya (Hanka Shiyui) figure modeled after a rare early Japanese prototype, reproduced at an intimate, palm-sized scale.
The pose and detailing follow the celebrated “Gilt Bronze Maitreya Half Lotus Position” statue that came to light in 1918 from a temple storehouse in Osaka and was later designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. This replica preserves the gentle volumes, youthful facial softness, and finely patterned ornaments associated with the Hakuho-period transition in Buddhist sculpture.
About this piece
This is a molded polystone reproduction with a gilt-bronze look, made as a faithful study of the Hakuho-period original dated by inscription to 666 (Bingyin, second year). The model lineage follows the Osaka-discovered statue known for its rounded body, rhythmic garment folds, and distinctive three-sided head ornament (sanmen toshoku) with warabide spiral motifs. The form exists within the long tradition of small devotional and reference images made from well-known historical works, allowing the proportions, ornament patterns, and pedestal inscription layout to be appreciated closely in a durable, display-friendly format.
Cultural note
In Japan, images of Miroku Bosatsu (Maitreya) in the hanka shiyui pose are widely recognized as part of Buddhist temple culture and art history, often encountered as revered icons as well as as reference points for early sculpture. Maitreya is understood at a high level as a bodhisattva associated with the future Buddha and with qualities of calm, patience, and contemplative presence. When kept in the home, such figures are typically approached with a quiet, respectful intention—placed in a clean, settled spot, treated as an image rather than a casual ornament, and handled with clean hands and mindful care.

This is recommended if you want your statue to be more than an object — a presence you can practice with.
